Hood Spotlight: Paterson, NJ (For Genesis Rincon #RIP) - a Tanka poem

Hood Spotlight: Paterson, NJ
(For Genesis Rincon #RIP 7.5.14)

Future’s bright, life’s good

Scooting to store in my Hood
Lost-ones. Shots. Screech. Cops.
Scattered shells, scooter fell - screams!
End scene - Never made thirteen

RACISM KILLS (For Omar Thornton)

RACISM KILLS

Racists encamp all around me. Daily I endure the stings of their hatred
All I desire is a fair chance as a man but I am ignored and abhorred
Cuz my shade means to degrade to those whose hearts are impure
I am smashed between a rock and given a hard place. Unwarranted mistreatment
Suffocates my soul and mangles my mind state. As flesh I’ve done my best to stay strong
Mine eyes now reveal that I am ill from infection of their contagious hate

Keep the faith they told me, report their evils, document and note their taunts
I gave them what they want, yet there is no record because I handed it over to devils
Left with no choice, I brandished 2 burners and a shotgun to help the deaf hear my voice
Let my light of ammo shine into the darkened hearts of 5 plus who ridiculed me just because
So much blood, yet it fails in contrast to my tears of despair spilled on a beer plantation near Hartford

Note: Readers, please understand that when I wrote this piece, I am in NO WAY condoning such awful behavior. This situation should have NEVER been handled in such a manner. It is cowardly, weak and not a positive action as a solution. He is no hero and should not be viewed as one. No one has the right to take another's life, I don't care for what reason they may feel justified in doing so. I wrote the piece from the perspective of someone who could do such a thing. How pressure can build up in someone and explode negatively. I wrote it from someone who feels hopeless in their situation and environment. I read over 20 articles about the story before writing and saw that he claimed racism on other jobs as well. He lived, not only worked, in an area saturated with "acceptable racism" - Racial mistreatment that is perceived as normal and accepted as so. I take it he wasn't strong enough mentally to leave this position, as he had left others, only to acquire another position to endure and experience more of the same. Hopelessness is the theme of the piece. Not being a hero or murdering as a way to fight back. This act was the result of the breaking point in one’s life when they “throw their hands up.”

Emotional Beast of Burden

Emotional Beast of Burden

Emotional pain is enduring…
It is the seed of depression
It is the root of unhappiness
It is the darkness that smothers the light
It is the hand that grips the throat where the song wants to sing
It is here in the midst of my heart
Cold and heavy metastasizing into my soul
It is here slowing my heart’s rhythm and fading my pulse
It is here for my life blood
Thirsty and unyielding…
It demands a liquid sacrifice before it returns to its slumber
But all I have to serve is a goblet full of fermented tears
Aged and robust with feelings of
regret, fear, defeat and despair
It drinks its fill and shrieks “not enough!”
It will not die until it feeds upon my eternal joy and gladness
And extinguishes the faith-fueled fire of my smile

Braving the Storm

Braving the Storm

My beloved dream is losing steam
Teeter-tottering…
Faltering on the balance beam
I yearn for its manifestation
So I must grasp the reins of control
And steer it away from its plummet towards the soil
But I am weak and the future seems bleak
Nothing is working out as planned
I feel out of the palm of God’s hand
I’m swaying in the middle of this tumultuous storm
Trying to stay warm
Soaking wet as I fret
Suffering in the freeze of the breeze
I shudder and fall to my knees
And fervently pray for the existence of my dream
That I must achieve,
That I must believe I will receive
But as the clouds crowd
The thunder rings aloud
I can’t see the silver lining above
Can’t feel the sunray warmth of God’s love
Fatigue and Fear coax me into retreat
It seems I’m headed for defeat
So I look to the hills and listen for that still small voice to speak
“Have you come this far for naught?”
Tried and teary-eyed
– I stand tall –
I can’t give up!

 I have 2 boys…
Who run towards the commencement of the noise
That shakes the floor amongst their toys
Where Mommy & Daddy scream real loud
My youngest he can’t pronounce
words like his big brother’s mouth
But his tear-filled eyes understand
that this is not a good thing
For two who vowed to share wedding rings
Amongst other things…
He says “He loves me” and I no longer feel the same
I scream his name and plead for his life
To please not do this in our children’s sight
Thinking that he just might
Hear my plight
And let me take our children away from here
His second worst fear
I shudder with rage as he comes near
It’s clear
Today’s date the granite shall display
He vows to dig my grave
if I take his kids away
My eyes reveal and convey
that Love has departed and Death has taken its place
We’ve been together for 7 years
And I knew this man up until this here
This –
That rocked my world and tilted its axis
I never asked for this –
This got me fucked up in the brain
This my eyes reveal with tearful pain
This my God is so hard to explain
I loved this man so much
the shock was just insane
When I heard him utter a familiar name
Making squeaky sounds upon our bed frame
My eyes revealed their secret shame
Caught by surprise
As he tried to deny
Him giving another man oral affection
in front of my eyes
Blinded by his deception and lies
Our shared worst fear realized…
I faded to black and awoke
to their ended lives…
I have 2 boys
Whose lives have been destroyed
Parental null and void
For my boys
my sincerest regret
My incarcerated Life…
for Daddy’s death
